Absolutely blown away by the Great Wall.  You hear that it’s big, you know that it’s long… but when you’re there looking off into the horizon you fully grasp those things for the first time.  I’m not even sure I’ve got the full sense of how big it is since it’s 4000 miles!  Yes 4000! I walked maybe 1 mile of it… at most 2 miles.  Amazing that people could accomplish such a feat.  At the same time it makes you realize that if this can be accomplished by man… how much more can be accomplished by God.

I’ve got more pictures up on FB.  The internet is a little too slow right now to put them up directly on this site.  But when I can figure out a better way to get them up here too, I’ll do it.  =)

Not sure I’m missing the US just yet… China is amazing.  Now if I could only somehow d/l the language into my head… all would be great.

If there’s one thing good about a little jet lag is that you wake up early in the morning and have time to edit and upload photos!

I’ve put a full album up on FB and here’s the link for all to see!  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2380997&id=3309938&l=1f6f68ffe5

After a 12 hour 40 minute flight I finally made it to Beijing. Then after being up for almost 30 hours straight I’m going to finally get some sleep! But not without a quick rundown of the day’s events:

The plane ride was uneventful (of which I’m not complaining). I was in the window seat with no one in the middle seat and a nice older gentleman in the aisle seat. He only small chatted for about 5 minutes, then went on to minding his own business and slept most of the ride. I’d say that makes for a just about perfect co-passenger.
The only complaint I’d have is that there was no in-flight movie. Sorta makes it a boring flight. Luckily I had rented a movie from iTunes (Hotel Rwanda) so I watched that on my computer. I was up almost the whole flight except for about a 4 hour window where I would sleep in 1 hour chunks. The flight actually went by pretty quickly.

Once I arrived my friend Yan picked me up from the airport and we headed over to her parent’s other apartment to drop off our things. Then we headed over to Tian’anmen Square/Forbidden City. It was a great place to take pictures and just enjoy a nice afternoon. We actually met up with some friends from San Diego (Shannon and Kristina)! So cool to see people halfway around the world (yes, it was coordinated, not a random fluke).

After the Forbidden City we went out to lunch. Yum. Now they know how to do chicken wings. Picture sticking two giant toothpicks holding the sides of the wing… so you can pick up the sticks and they’re like giant chopsticks holding the wing for you. Brilliant. I think I have a picture to upload later. Plus super delicious.

After lunch we went over to the Summer Palace. A photographer’s paradise. I think you could spend a whole month there just taking pictures. I can’t wait to share those!

After riding 2 buses and 4 subways, we finally made it home.

It’s been a long day, but a really great day.

    I really like China. =)

    25 hours… and counting.

All packed.  Two very heavy bags.  I think I’m going to appreciate the invention of the wheel…

Not quite sure how to feel… a combination of happy, excited, sad, anxious, nervous, hopeful, worried and tired.

    Regardless of it all…

    CHINA HERE I COME!

So this past week and a half I’ve just been hanging out at home.  It has really felt like a summer vacation from when I was in high school or college.  Most days I can’t even remember what day of the week it is.  I’ve also had to deal with the consolidation of two rooms into one.  I took all my stuff from San Diego and brought it up to LA, but there was already stuff in LA…  Today I can finally say that everything is cleaned up… but now I have to PACK!  So more messiness.

Some of the highlights of my last few weeks here:

-Getting to go to my cousin’s softball games.  I only have one little cousin (Junior in high school!) and I wasn’t really able to get to see many of her games in the past (due to me living in San Diego and her playing in LA) so I’ve been able to go to four games since I’ve been back.  She’s really amazing at softball considering that she just started to play a few years ago!! I wish I could see more.

-Going to the Dodger game with my dad.  We’ve had season tickets as long as I can remember, but I don’t think I really started to appreciate it until I was already in college and living in San Diego.  I LOVE my Dodgers… I bleed Dodger blue (why is the sky and the ocean blue??? That’s because God is a Dodger fan =p)… they’re going to be one of the BIG things that I’ll miss in China.  So I’m glad that I got to go to at least one game this season… and they won!! And Manny hit a homer!!

-Going dress shopping for my bride’s maid dress!  Yes… I have a pink dress now (well when it arrives).  I’m super stoked to get to be in Molly’s wedding.  I can’t wait to come back for it!

-Hanging out with my bank friends one last time.  We just went out for dinner but it was great.  I love those guys.  We really know how to have a lot of fun.  There’s always someone to pick on and make us laugh!  I realize now that I laugh a lot less without their constant source of entertainment.  =)

-My going away party in San Diego.  It was so much fun to get to play some board games (BABY BOOM!) together.  I’m going to miss all you guys a ton and a half when I’m in China.

    .

It’s been a good month off from work, but now it’s coming down to the end of this vacation.  The good news is that it’s the start of a new vacation.  Beijing is my first stop, purely for pleasure!!

I’m definitely starting to get anxious and nervous about the whole thing.  Sleep is something that hasn’t come easy lately, my mind is just constantly thinking about things to do still, things to come, and the things that have been.  I can’t believe that I only have two more nights sleeping on my bed.

Though it all there has been a constant sense of comfort in knowing that God is in control of it all…
